Maison de Victor Hugo
In the south east corner of Place des Vosges, the former Place Royale, the King's counsellor, Isaac Arnauld, was granted a lot in 1605. The house he erected was in line with the layout of the area, with a main building facing the square plus two wings overlooking the courtyard and the Impasse Guéménée.
The de Rohans, who owned the property for some 150 years, made significant improvements and gave the building its present-day name, Hôtel de Rohan-Guéménée. In 1785, the then-owner, Jacques Desmary, added two balconies, none of which has survived to this day. It was in this building that, in 1832,
Victor Hugo rented an apartment. The lease was signed in July and the Hugo family moved in October. In 1903, the building was inaugurated as a museum dedicated to the author and his work. Maison Victor Hugo is now an extensive research centre and includes a vast library. The site also promotes various cultural projects and activities relating to Hugo.
