Musée du Louvre
The
Musée du Louvre, former home of the kings of
France, is among the largest museums in the world, with its collections being distributed into seven departments, namely Oriental antiques, Egyptian antiques, Greek, Etruscan, Roman antiques, as well as Paintings, Sculptures and Objets d'Art from the Medieval period to 1850.
The Grand Louvre is accessible via the famous glass pyramid designed by I.M. Pei. In 1993, the Richelieu wing was opened and currently exhibits French sculptures, objets d'art, and paintings from the Northern schools along with French paintings. The site also offers displays on oriental antiques and the art of the Muslim world.
The
Carrousel du Louvre represents a large underground complex featuring stores, car parks and areas for exhibits and prestigious events. In October 1994, new rooms with displays on foreign sculptures were inaugurated. The rooms in the Sully and Denon wings showcase Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiques plus Italian paintings.
