Breitscheidplatz
Breitscheidplatz is one of the main squares in Berlin, situated in the western part of the city. The area lies between the Kurfuerstendamm, the Tauentzien and Budapester-Strasse. The square was constructed in 1889 on the field with the hunting grounds of Kurfürst Joachim II. Initially, the place was called the Gutenbergplatz, later - Augusta-Viktoria Platz and currently it is named after Rudolf Breitscheid who supported the social democracy and died in a Nazi concentration camp in 1944. It so happened that later the area was used for building a church, following the traditions in the Neo-Romantic style and was constructed by Franz Schwechten, the royal architect of Wilhelm II.
After World War I, the Breitscheidplatz became a site for meetings of intellectuals in Berlin, including writers, artists and musicians who chose the Romanisches Cafe for exchanging ideas and discussions. Bad times came for the square in 1943, when the it was heavily bombed and most of it was destroyed. After World War II, Breitscheidplatz underwent massive reconstruction and became the symbolic centre of West Berlin, Alexanderplatz being the symbol of East Berlin. The war had bad consequences for the Gedächtniskirche and other sites, so it was decided that new monuments were to be constructed, including a new church that was placed next to the destroyed one. The old church was turned into a memorial against war and destruction.

Another site that was constructed in the same period was the 86-metre high Europa Centre, which was placed on the square in 1965. It became known as the main commercial centre in Berlin. Europa Centre’s building is still a popular tourist attraction, with its many department stores, restaurants and cafes. From there visitors often go to Berlin Zoo, which is situated within a close distance.

Nowadays the Breitscheidplatz is one of the most visited places in the city, particularly for its combination of the old and new, commercial trends and cultural sites. There are plans for future development of the square, which include improving the pedestrian areas, renovation of the Europa Centre, destruction of the old Schimmelpfenghaus and construction of the Neue Schimmelpfeng Haus, which will host administrative offices, a hotel and restaurants. The bus station in front of the zoo will be renovated, a large cinema complex will be built and the quarter is going to become an attractive city area with a lively ambience.
