Deutsches Theater
The best actors and directors plus the most famous plays - all that can be found in
Deutches Theater, one of the oldest and most important cultural institutions of Berlin. It was founded in 1850, as
Friedrich-Wilhelm-Städtisches Theater. Housed in an elegant Classical building, the
Deutches Theater has two rooms with 606 and 234 seats. The larger stage focuses predominantly on classic plays, including masterpieces of Schiller,
Goethe,
Shakespeare, Aeschylus and Euripides. The smaller stage is devoted to the contemporary and modern performances, such as O'Neill's, Williams', Yasmina Reza's and Elfriede Jelinek's pieces. The theatre is situated in the centre of Berlin.
Original name of the theatre was
Friedrich-Wilhelm-Städtisches Theater to commemorate Frederick William IV of Prussia.
Deutches Theater owes much of its development and fame to Max Reinhardt, famous director, who was head of the theatre in 1905-1933. He extended the theatre to the second edifice, known as
Kammerspiele, where modern performances are staged. During his direction of the theatre, it gained reputation of the best stage in Germany. It was known for its independent repertoire and attitude, even during times of Nazi rule of Germany.
The theatre boasts beautiful facade and elegant interior, being recognised as one of the most impressive venues of Berlin. But the theatre is not limited to one location – the team gives guest performances worldwide, including Europe, North and South America, and Japan. It attracts great actors and remains one of the best stages in Germany.
