Tzistarakis Mosque
Sitting on Monastiraki Square, this 1759 mosque has been transformed into a ceramics museum. A plaque topping the entrance states that the the edifice was erected by Mustafa Aga Tsisdarakis, a local official during the Ottoman period. The structure is known by many different names, most notably 'The Mosque of the Lower Fountain', as it used to contain a fountain, 'The Mosque of the Lower Market', and 'The Mosque in Monastiraki Square'.
Following the Independence, the minaret was dismantled and the site was acquired by the State. Thus, the mosque became the property of the army and during the second half of the 19th Century, it served a variety of purposes, including its functions as a guardhouse, a prison, a military establishment and a storehouse. Eventually, it was restored to its initial appearance by Anastassios Orlandos in the beginning of the 20th Century, and the site became home of the Museum of Greek Handicrafts. This institution was renamed 'National Museum of Decorative Arts' in 1923 and 'Museum of Greek Folk Art' in 1959. The museum found a new permanent home in the 1970s, and the mosque was employed to house a vast ceramics collection.
