Athens Stock Exchange
The Athens Stock Exchange (ASE) has already established itself as a traditional institution. It was inaugurated in 1876, only half a century after the country gained its independence. Initially located in the district of Psiris, a commercial area set close to the city centre, it relocated to its new building in 2007.
As its first place of residence was on Sofocleous Street, the stock exchange is still locally referred to as Sofocleous. Having abandoned this first rented building, the stock exchange purchased a new propertyand permanently relocated there. Since July 2007, ASE has been residing at its new headquarters on Athinon Street. The building, designed by Vovos Constructions, represents an excellent piece of modernistic architecture. As of 2007, the Greek parliament reached an agreement that would allow the Athens Stock Exchange to enter the European stock exchange market, in the form of the consolidation of the benefits of principal stock exchanges of the European Union. Currently, the stock exchange has over 300 listed companies.
