Athens Academy
The national academy of Greece, and the principal research institute of the country, the Academy was founded in 1926, and is still working uder the aegis of the Greek Ministry of Education. Its main building, representing an important piece of Neo-classical architecture, is often included in itineraries as one of Athens' noteworthy landmarks.
Oficially inaugurated in 1926, the Academy still bears reference to the ancient Academy of Plato. The present-day institution, however, has three major divisions: Natural Sciences, Letters and Arts, Moral and Political Sciences. The organisation comprises some 14 research centres, plus a total of 10 research offices, as well as the Ioannis Sykoutris research library. The Academy has also been working on the establishment of newer structures, such as the Foundation for Biomedical Research. It operates a number of branches all over the globe, including The Hellenic Institute for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Italy. Also a member of a number of international organisations, the Academy is part of the International Association of Academies, All European Academies (ALLEA) and Inter Academy Council (IAC).
