University of Athens
A well-established institution, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is the country's oldest academic entity of the eastern Mediterranean. Established in 1837, the university is currently the second-largest higher education institution in Greece, ranked after the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The University is located in the residence of architect Stamatis Kleanthes, at the northern end of the Acropolis. Once known as the Othonian University, it is often referred to by that name.
The university now comprises four faculties: Theology, Medicine, Law and Arts. In 1841, the institution relocated to a new home, the Propylaea, a piece by Danish architect Theophil Hansen. The University went through a radical restructuring in 1904 when its Faculty of Arts was divided into a Faculty of Arts and a Faculty of Sciences, the latter having later split into a Department of Physics and Mathematics and a School of Pharmacy. The Department of Chemistry was added a decade later, followed by the School of Dentistry in the 1920s. The university campus in the Ilissia district was built in the 1960s to house the Faculties of Philosophy, Theology and Sciences.
