Mary Magdelene Tower
Nowadays, the Mary Magdelene Tower (Mária Magdolna Torony) is the only part that has remained of the Romanesque Franciscan church from the 13th Century which once stood at this spot. Although the tower is primarily a post-war reconstruction, it has a rich and turbulent history.
During the Turkish occupation, it continued to hold Christian services and was used both by the Protestants and Catholics as the chancel. Later, it was converted into a mosque; however, after the expulsion of the Turks in the 17th Century, the tower reverted back to a Catholic church, where Emperor Franz I was crowned in 1872. Later it served as the garrison church for soldiers stationed at the adjacent army barracks. The temple was also seriously destroyed during World War II. However, some of its architectural features can still be admired.
Name: Mary Magdelene Tower
Address: Országház utca/Kapisztrán tér
