Margaret Island (Margitsziget)
Margaret Island, linked to the city centre by the Árpád and Margaret Bridges, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landmarks in Budapest. This nearly 2.5 kilometre-long island is an ideal place to hide from the noise of the city. It was named after Princess Margaret, King's Bela IV's daughter who was sent to the Dominican convent built on this site in the 13th Century.
The ruins of the old convent have survived until present day and they can still be visited on the east bank of Margaret Island. Heading south alongside the island, you will pass a large rock garden leading to the
Szent Mihály templom, a modern reconstruction of the 12th-century church. There are also two public baths on the island: the sprawling Palatinus strand, with a capacity of 20,000 people, and the smaller Hajós baths, bearing the name of the first Hungarian Olympic gold medallist in swimming.
