The Matthias Church
In the centre of Buda's Castle District stands the Mátyás Templom (officially called the Church of Our Lady). It owes its name to King Matthias Corvinus who ordered the construction of the first tower of the church. This 700-year-old building serves as a symbol of the city's rich and tragic history.
It was home to several coronations, including the one of Charles IV, the last Habsburg king, in 1916. The church was also the site where King Mátyás married his two wives, Catherine of Podiebrad, and later Beatrice of Aragon. Then the church fell under the Turkish occupation for over 150 years. It served as the city's main mosque until 1686, when it was restored in the Baroque style. Thanks to the work of famous architect, Frigyes Schule, the building managed to regain much of its former splendour and it is still attracting tourists with its impressive facade and lavish interiors.
Name: The Matthias Church
