Opera House
Built to celebrate the Hungarian millennium, the splendid State Opera House (Magyar Állami Operaház) was finally opened in 1884. Considered one of the most beautiful historical buildings in Budapest, this impressive neo-Renaissance building is set on Andrássy utca, in the very heart of the city.
The facade is lavishly decorated with statues that represent the world's greatest composers. Among them are Mozart, Beethoven, Bizet, Verdi and Tchaikovsky. There are also the grand figures of Franz Liszt, and Ferenc Erke, the man who composed the Hungarian national anthem and was the first director of the opera house.

The interior of the building is also lavishly decorated, with its splendid Karoly Lotz's frescoed ceiling in the main auditorium, depicting Mount Olympus, the mythical home of the Gods. Of particular interest is the imposing horseshoe shaped auditorium, with a capacity of over 1,200 people.
