San Marco
This religious complex, which constitutes a church and a convent, was recently converted into a museum featuring a valuable collection of manuscripts. It was here that Fra Angelico, the 15th-century Renaissance painter, and religious leader Girolamo Savonarola used to live in alternating years.
Built on the site of the 12th-century Vallombrosan monastery, the complex came into the hands of the Silvestrine Benedictines, only to be acquired by Cosimo de' Medici the Elder. The event was followed by a large-scale renovation conducted by Michelozzo. While strolling through the ambient complex, one is to invariably spot the many monks' cells, the majority of which were frescoed by Fra Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli. The Medicis entertained a particular fondness for this site, and Cosimo de' Medici himself often would retreat to his own cell in the convent.
