Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico)
Holding one of the world's principal collections of Etruscan art, this museum is installed in Palazzo della Crocetta, a 17th-century edifice attributed to Giulio Parigi. Having started to operate as a museum in the late 19th Century, it has ever since maintained a comprehensive Egyptian section, as well as displays of Greek and Byzantine art.
The Nizzoli collection, assembled in the 19th Century, is, perhaps, the most prominent feature of the section, and contains various pieces from the expedition of Ippolito Rosellini. The museum's centrepiece is 'Idolino', a bronze Greek sculpture occupying its own room next to the Bronze Gallery. Of the Etruscan works displayed there, a well-crafted statue of Minerva is the most significant. Otherwise, one can view the 5th-century 'Wounded Chimera of Bellerophon', the 3th-century 'Harranguer', plus a comprehensive selection of antique vases.
