Pitti Palace (Palazzo Pitti)
A large Renaissance palazzo, Pitti is set on the southern bank of the River Arno, not far from Ponte Vecchio. Completed in the latter half of the 15th Century, the structure was comissioned by Luca Pitti, the famous Florentine banker, to be his residence. Purchased by the Medici family less than a Century later, the site quickly became the main residence of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, thus receiving loads of art objects, fine furniture, sculpture and painting.
Shortly occupied by Napoleon in the 18th Century, the site was raised to the status of a royal palace, and was eventually handed back to the state by King Victor Emmanuel III in the early 20th Century with all its treasures. The
palazzo was thus converted into a museum, which is currently one of the city's best visited galleries, though displaying only a fraction of the vast Medici collections of art.
