Arena Civica
Milan’s premier event venue, Arena Civica, was designed in the neo-Classical style by the architect Luigi Canonica in 1805. It’s situated in the north-eastern corner of the Parco Sempione. It’s location was a deliberate choice – in close proximity to the reconstructed
Castello Sforzesco, the Arena Civica was devised as a permanent ground for major festivities and celebrations. The arena was built using materials taken from the ruins of the castle. Modelled after Roman amphitheatres, it features an elliptic floor framed by four main gates.
The south-eastern entrance is the granite Triumphal Arch, supported by four golden columns. Across the arena from the arch, there is the Porta delle Carceri with two Roman-inspired towers. The gate on the north-eastern side is Porta Libitinaria, facing the Loggia Reale leading to the south-west and featuring a massive granite Corinthian column. Nowadays, the Arena Civica is used primarily as a ground for sports and cultural events. Its elegant appearance was upgraded and remodelled throughout the 20th Century. Terraces were expanded in order to increase the venue’s total capacity.
