Piccolo Theatre (Teatro Grassi)
In 1947, Milan’s ‘little’ theatre company, Piccolo Theater (Teatro Grassi), well known for Italian and foreign plays, was establish by two young theatre directors Paolo Grassi and Giorgio Stehler, the most significant director of the latter half of the 20th Century. In 1991, the theater was declared Teatro d'Europa, and is now three venues: Teatro Grassi, Nuovo Piccolo (Teatro Strehler) and Teatro Studio.
Grassi and Stehler joined their efforts in a common objective – to establish a new theater in concept and perspective, with a major accent on the director and overall performance, thus deviating from the popular concept of star-focused theater which dominated the 19th Century. Making the theater largely accessible to everyone, the young directors led the theater out to the people, especially conducting performances in rural areas, while significantly reducing ticket prices. In turn, they further popularised and enriched the theater with new spheres of human life and inspiration.
