IRCCS San Raffaele
The name San Raffaele comes from the Hebrew word Raf-el, which means 'God heals' or 'God’s medicine'. San Raffaele Hospital is a private Scientific Institute, which belongs to the San Raffaele del Monte Tabor Foundation. The latter is recognised by the Italian Ministry of Health as a Scientific Institute that carries out biomedical research as well as clinical activities of relevant national interest. The mission of the San Raffaele Institute is to cure and assist diseased individuals. It follows the Gospel proposition: "Go, teach, heal.” The Scientific Institute San Raffaele was also recognised as Institute for Molecular Medicine in 2001.
Most clinical services offered by the San Raffaele are available as part of the services covered by the National Health Plan (SSN) but can be accessed as well on a private basis by patients who are willing to pay for their treatment. The clinical and diagnostic services offered by the San Raffaele are structured as Departments and Services, including most medical and surgical disciplines: ranging from Internal Medicine to General Surgery, Neurological Surgery, Neurology, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Ophthalmology.

As a National Institute recognised by the Italian Ministry of Health for its integrated research and care activities, the San Raffaele is funded every year by the Ministry to carry out intramural research, which includes both "current" research and "targeted" research. Current research comprises pre-determined research areas of national interest, agreed upon with the Ministry of Health. Current research funding involves both scientific and health care-related parameters, and covers general costs and personnel costs. Targeted research is subject to periodic requests for applications by the Italian Ministry of Health.
