Monument of Victor Emanuel II
The Monument of Victor Emanuel II is also commonly known as Il Vittoriano, meaning ‘the victorious’. The monumental structure was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and was constructed between 1885 and 1911. It commemorates the achievements of Victor Emmanuel II of Savoia, the Italian king who was successful with the unification of the country in 1870. An elegant flight of broad steps leads to the symbolic Altar of the Nation.
At the Altar of the Nation, there is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, featuring an eternal flame in memory of all those who have fallen in battle between the Italian counties. The steps to the altar are lined with allegorical statues, including bronze-cast representations of Thought and Action. The foot of the monument is marked with two fountains, each with an imposing statue in the centre. The right-hand statue represents the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the left-hand the Adriatic Sea.
