Spanish Steps
Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti, better known to visitors as the Spanish Steps, is a monumental stairway consisting of 138 steps, located in the very heart of historic Rome. Designed by Alessandro Specchi and Francesco de Sanctis, the staircase connects
Piazza di Spagna and the French Church of Trinita dei Monti. The picturesque steps are surrounded by a traffic-free zone as well as an impressive number of the city’s prominent landmarks, which makes them a particularly popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike.
The Spanish Steps are also a popular location for festivals, celebrations, artistic installations and demonstrations. On Christmas, an original 19th-century crib is symbolically displayed as part of the seasonal arrangement on the first landing of the staircase. In May, the steps are adorned with pots of azaleas. In the summer, they also host a popular flower market. The legendary staircase is featured prominently in a number of films and songs, including José Quintero’s ‘The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone’ (1961), Bernardo Bertolucci's ‘Besieged’ (1998) and Bob Dylan’s ‘When I Paint My Masterpiece’ (1971).
