Stadio Olimpico
Stadio Olimpico is the premiere sports venue of the Italian capital. The home ground of AS Roma, SS Lazio and the Italian national team, it was constructed in 1936. Throughout its history, it has hosted the events of the 1960 Summer Olympics, the 1977 European Cup, the 1987 World Athletics Championships and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Boasting a capacity of 82,000, the stadium underwent a major remodelling for the 1990 World Cup. The renovation turned the slightly outdated stadium into an ultra-modern roofed structure resembling an elliptical bowl.
One of the few unchanged elements is one of the main stands, known as the Tribuna Tevere. The difference between this one and other stands is clearly visible: it produces a curiously irregular effect in the otherwise very symmetrical venue. The roof rests on 12 massive pillars of concrete as well as a ring of rectangular beams. The picturesque surroundings of the stadium make is a very attractive spot. Adjacent is a smaller stadium, known as Stadio dei Marmi, or the ‘marble stadium’, adorned with 60 white marble statues commemorating 60 famous Italian athletes.
