Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, known simply as Frari, is among the most visited religious sites in the 'City of Water'. The basilica has been of great theological and cultural significance since its creation. The first temple on its current place in the heart of San Polo district was constructed between 1250 and 1338. The building was erected by the Franciscans and had the nickname Ca' Grande.
Immediately after its completion new plans for expanding and even rebuilding of the church were launched. Therefore, at the end of the 13th Century the current grandiose structure came into existence. It reveals a mixture of Franciscan and Gothic architectural styles and its stately appearance is complemented by the campanile from 1396, the second tallest in Venice. Like most Venetian churches, the Frari features a rather plain brick facade with little ornaments.

On the contrary, the interior of the basilica is remarkably rich and valuable, due to the great amount of artwork stored inside. Only a small part of them comprise the high Titian's Assumption altarpiece, 'Madonna di Ca'Pesaro' also by Titian, plus works of Giovanni Bellini, Donatello, Bartolomeo Vivarini and many others. In the church, dedicated to the Assumption, some of the brightest personalities of the Renaissance are buried, like Titian, the composer Claudio Monteverdi and a dozen prominent Venetian senators and doges.
