Barovier
The Barovier Gallery is a fairy-tale of glass and colour, a dream that a girl from Genoa managed to make come true. The owner, Marina Barovier, founded her first gallery in 1980, and later moved it to a bigger place – its present location. Her collection of glass is one of the most impressive in the region, as she aims at presenting the best of Venetian glass art. But her most important merit is the love she has dedicated to reviving the traditions of Venetian glass-making. You'll see works by Vittoria Zecchin, Napoleone Martinuzzi, Ercole Barovier and others.
The story of the Barovier girl and her glass-dream started when she first came to Venice. Marina was born in Genoa, but Venice became her new home. Love at first sight suddenly struck when she met her future husband. Barovier's family had an impressive collection of Cappelin chandeliers that she was overwhelmed by, and from that moment on her dedication to the glass art of Venetian masters grew stronger and stronger. She became a collector, and opened her first gallery in 1980. Marina was not a mere collector, but rather an explorer and discoverer. She found true inspiration in the old traditions of Muranese glass-making, the artistic value of which had been for many long years underestimated. She collected glass art objects from the 19th and 20th Centuries and provided an exhibition area for modern artists. Her collection grew, and she proved to be a successful manager. Thus Marina managed to ensure a larger space for her gallery, and in 1995 she re-opened it. Besides her work as a gallerist and collector, Marina Barovier dedicated significant efforts to research and writing. She published many works about Muranese glass art and the traditions of Venetian glass.
