Magere Brug
Magere Brug is a small footbridge linking the two sides of the river Amstel in Amsterdam. It stands out among other bridges of the Dutch capital because of its size and delicate structure, which have earned it the nicknames of Skinny Bridge and Chicken Bridge.
Magere Brug links the Amstel River banks at Kerkstraat, located between the canals Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. It was constructed in 1670 and broadened and slightly remodelled over time. Made of white painted wood, it's a bascule bridge, allowing for unrestricted movement of large barges along the river. It's considered to be one of the most curious landmarks within the historic city centre.
Nowadays only pedestrians and cyclists can cross the river using the bridge. Although sightseeing boats are small enough to pass under it, it opens many times during the day to let large vessels pass. Decorated with over 1,200 tiny light bulbs, it makes for a particularly charming sight at night. It was featured in several films, such as the 1971 James Bond film 'Diamonds Are Forever.'
