Boom Chicago / Leidseplein Theatre
In the beginning of the 90s, a group of American immigrants in the lively Dutch capital decided to share their new idea with the world. They were bold and daring and needed large audience for whom they could perform. First, they formed the Boom Chicago group, naming it after their home home town. Boom Chicago started out as an improvisational comedy and sketch studio. Its founders skillfully mixed political satire with comedy and humor addressing the issues form the headlines. They created performances, which provoked, made laugh and were always a bit “right in the heart.”
At first the citizens of Amsterdam protested against the establishment of such an artistic group. Despite their openness to new ideas and a free mind, Dutch people are still Europeans. They weren't sure if an American theatrical group amongst the renowned Amsterdam theatres would find its place. As the time passed, the group grew in skills and fame. They performed not only in Amsterdam, but all over Europe and further. The citizens of Amsterdam had to change their opinion and acknowledge that Boom Chicago was becoming one of the top attractions of their city.

This was just the beginning. The real story started when in 1997 the group Boom Chicago took the Leidseplein Theatre and fully renovated it. Leidseplein Theatre was the place that gave stage to the classical masters of Dutch theatres and the most beloved national stars from the 30s. Now it was transformed into a modern performance hall. A video studio was opened and the group hired a video director. Chicago Boom took a new direction in its development as multimedia were introduced in the shows. Both recorded and live video was used to enhance the effect. The inside and outside of the theatre were equipped with cameras and new technical equipment. Thus the classical Leidseplin Theater had become one of the best equipped and modern studios worldwide.

The official launch of the Boom Chicago video productions took place in 2004 with comedy videos for the Internet, TV, mobiles, business campaign, etc. In 2006, the group shocked the world again with a special campaign of the World Cup – live shows, the Internet and mobile series, etc. In September the same year, the group hired one more video director and doubled its video output.

Today Boom Chicago is known in Amsterdam and in the whole world for its bold spirit and professional work. It is innovative in both – technical and philosophical aspects. Boom Chicago productions never feared facing extreme or sensitive issues – racism, xenophobia, politics, etc. It criticises and satirises. It makes laugh and makes think. One of the most impressive attractions in the 'city of the free minded' is the Boom Chicago Theatre.
