Stadsschouwburg
The Municipal Theatre of Amsterdam is housed in a beautiful Baroque building situated on the site where theatres have almost always existed – the former ones were destroyed by the fire. The theatre was fully renovated recently and presents a comfortable and modernly equipped setting. Right on the Leidseplin, this is one of the most important theatre venues in the city. The theatre is famous for promoting native Dutch dramatical art. It gives stage to many national and occasionally also foreign performances - most often in Dutch language.
The
Stadsschouwburg (Amsterdam Municipal Theatre) was opened in 1638. At that time, the building was entirely made of wood, so unfortunately when there was a fire in the theatre it burnt down almost completely. A new building was soon afterwards built on the same site, but once again it was a wooden structure. The next fire destroyed it entirely and the beautiful Baroque building which houses the theatre until present day was constructed in the centre of Amsterdam. In these first Centuries of its history, the
Stadsschouwburg was the place where the Dutch theatre developed. It was the biggest and most important stage in the country, apart from plays, staging operas as well.
In the course of its history, the Municipal Theatre of Amsterdam managed to keep its strictly Dutch spirit. Even today, in the era of globalisation, the plays are mostly in Dutch and by Dutch playwrights. Classical authors of the Dutch dramatic art are never forgotten here, but modern artists are also welcome. Nevertheless, sometimes performances in English can be seen. As to the theatre’s repertoire, it is mainly focused on performances for adults. Only sometimes youth and children’s plays are featured. Such performances are loved by the locals and always attract a large audience. Besides theatre, the
Stadsschouwburg often hosts musical and dance performances. You can really enjoy opera and ballet here, with the theatre's wonderful atmosphere and exceptionally talented performers.
The Municipal Theatre of Amsterdam has a resident artistic group, which is in fact the most important one in the Netherlands - Toneelgroep Amsterdam. At the same time, it preserves the national dramatic traditions and sets new trends in the Dutch theatre.
The theatre has two halls – the big hall and a small one. Sometimes performances are also staged in the foyer or in the
Rotonde – the Roundabout, depending on their character and stage design requirements. The small hall often hosts smaller theatre companies. The theatre is considered one of the best stages for a young artist to launch his or her career. The calendar of performances is annual and it is updated each year. It is highly recommended to book seats in advance since the Municipal Theatre is among the most visited in Amsterdam.
Today, the Municipal Theatre of Amsterdam is most visited not only by those cherishing traditions, but also by those who appreciate highly professional dramatic art, by the seekers of the national Dutch spirit and by all admirers of the adorable Baroque architecture of the city. The Municipal Theatre of Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful buildings in Amsterdam offering highest quality artistic experience – it is more than worth your visit.
