Amsterdamse Bos
Amsterdamse Bos is a huge woods between the Netherlands’ capital city of Amsterdam and the smaller city of Amstelveen. As a matter of fact, the very name Amsterdamse Bos can be translated as 'Amsterdam Woods'. However, this isn’t a natural woods but an artificial one, and its planning and construction was taken up as late as 1934 and finished in 1967 with the planting of the trees around the hill. Bosbaan Lake was also a product of man’s genius and dexterity.
The park’s area is big enough for camping and getting the most out of nature, Moreover, the park is full of attractions for canoe and rowboats enthusiasts: every year in the Amsterdamse Bos’ rowing-course, rowing regattas take place, and one can also hire a pedal-boat or a canoe at the Grote Vijver. There’s also a museum that holds permanent exhibitions on the process of preserving and maintaining the woods. The cricket playground is where some very important cricket events have taken place. Most of the activities, excursions, exhibitions and even children’s parties are organised at the Bezoekerscentrum, one of the biggest attractions of the Amsterdamse Bos.

Another attraction in the Amsterdamse Bos is the goat farm Bio Dyn Geitenkaasboerderij, where about a hundred lovable goats are kept. It's a perfect opportunity for small children to learn more about these animals. There’s also a wildlife area around the farm where mouflons and bison graze. Moreover, there are two swimming pools in the park. In the summer, adventure playgrounds are constructed. Those that decide to go to Amsterdamse Bos during the summer, shouldn't miss the opportunity to visit the spectacular performances at the adjacent open-air theatre.

Those fond of sports can practise a wide range of activities on the playgrounds, from cricket and hockey to football. When the cold winter ices the lakes and the stadiums, there’s always a chance for some ice skating. If running is your favourite sport, there’s a half-marathon alley starting from the stand near Bosbaan Lake. Or, if you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike at the Van Nijenrodeweg entrance.

For those interested in botany, there’s a chance to visit the Vogeleiland Botanical Garden, where all the flora species of the Amsterdamse Bos are concentrated. The Amsterdamse Bos features a breeding ground for grassland birds as well as the banks of the Nieuwe Meer and the Amstelveense Poel, which are reed zones, that used to be found throughout Netherlands some years ago. The waters are swarming with fish, so in the summer a special ticket allows for doing some fishing. The Museumtram, which operates during the summertime, gives visitors the opportunity to see the eastern side of the woods from the Haarlemmermeerstation to Bovenkerk.
