Amsterdam Centre for Architecture
ARCAM Amsterdam Centre for Architecture was set up in 1986 as a foundation. It aims to reach the largest possible public and to broaden architecture's appeal and developments in Amsterdam. The foundation also has a function as a coordinator and works together with a long list of institutes. ARCAM supports and co-ordinates existing programmes and also initiates new activities.
The Centre offers an information point where people interested in architecture can be directed to interesting buildings and sites in Amsterdam. At ARCAM, the public can find a large number of books, folders, magazines, sites, maps and also a collection of newspaper cuttings related to architecture. This information is useful for those who are interested in urban planning and can help them find interesting buildings and sites in the capital.
Each year at the Centre an average of five exhibitions are organised. The exhibition programme is varied and concerns architects, urban developments, buildings, architecture abroad and architecture in Netherlands. For instance, the ARCAM PANORAMA is a presentation on Amsterdam architecture from the year 800 untill now.
ARCAM's architectural guide boasts information on a large number of Amsterdam buildings, most of them post-1940. You can use a digital map of Amsterdam, a time bar and a search facility. Amsterdam has many unique buildings and urban areas. ARCAM has published the following architecture routes: Architecture seen from the tram, Amsterdam on sea and Oostelijk Havengebied Amsterdam.
