The Institute Ramon Lull
The Institut Ramon Llull (IRL), located in Barcelona, seeks to foster and promote the Catalan language and culture by teaching Catalan to the general public, as well as in universities and institutions of higher learning.
IRL also strives to promote Catalan literature internationally by providing support for translations into other languages; organising seminars, meetings and exchange programmes; and emphasising the impact of Catalan art work. The institute promotes projects, collaborations and joint endeavours with institutions and organisations of other countries and cultures dedicated to the spread of Catalan culture.
The Language Department of IRL provides teaching and linguistic resources for the study of the Catalan language, and trains teachers who specialise in Catalan as a second language. IRL’s Department of Artistic Creation aims to popularise the work of Catalan performers and artists on the international stage. The institute offers financial support to artists and institutions that facilitate travelling abroad, and provides information about Catalonia’s artistic heritage. The Department of Humanities and Science strives to disseminate Catalan literature through the publication of essays and scientific research, including cultural journals in the Catalan language. The department also shares the research of Catalan scholars, concerning linguistic diversity and cultural pluralism, with other colleagues abroad.
