Parc Central del Poble Nou (Central Poble Nou Park)
Being one of the youngest Barcelona parks, the Central Park of the zone Poble Nou is designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, who also is the author of the newest Barcelona landmark- the Agbar Tower that can be found just at the Glories Catalanes Square in the same district. The triangle-shaped Park Poble Nou was a mere project in 2005 but the construction works began in 2006 and by 2007 it was already open to the public. Nevertheless, the park is still not in its completed state because the profuse flora that is planned to adorn it needs a couple of years to grow.
Although three streets cross the park it is isolated visually and acoustically from the traffic by walls of flowers, which is a wonderful idea itself. About 56 square metres large, the park is designed to unite several sections – a quare for the national dance La Sardana, the old Oliva Artes Factory that was renovated and turned into the Barcelona Architecture Centre. What is one of the most impressive features of the park are the flower tunnels (according to Nouvel’s vision) and the aromatic flowers that create an atmosphere of freshness. On the park’s grounds there is a basketball court, table tennis facilities and a children’s area. What is important to know, however, is the presence of another Poble Nou Park that is situated just at the seaside (Carrer Salvador Espriu) not far from the Central Poble Nou Park but very different in character – with large green spaces, a football playground nearby, a pond and the sandy beach.
