Parc del Forum
It depends strongly on one's point of view whether one calls the Parc del Forum (Park of the Forum) a park or not because it doesn’t correspond to the classical idea of a green space. Calling it a leisure complex would be more like it but nevertheless, the inhabitants of Barcelona look upon it as a park. Situated on the Mediterranean seaside, this recreation area does have a lot to be seen, and a lot to offer in terms of relaxation. Covering 23 hectares the Forum Park is a large pen space with many curious structures in it, all of them designed for the people of Barcelona and for the city’s visitors as well. This modernist ensemble of water, green and built-up areas has incorporated important ideas of the 21st Century in its very composition such as sustainable development, urban planning, human rights and respect for diversity.
The Forum Park is indeed a new structure in Barcelona’s landscape being the successor of 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures held mainly on the specially designed spot in 2004. This 141-day event took place from the beginning of May to the last days of September 2004 and was organised by the mutual work of the Barcelona city council, the regional Catalonian government, the Spanish government and UNESCO. The idea for the Forum (as it was later called in short) came from the Barcelona mayor Pasqual Maragall i Mira as a stage of the recreation programme of the city after the Olympic Games in 1992 and as a way of promoting the city’s tourist role. The international exhibition was held at the eastern end of Avinguda Diagonal and the seaside area between Barcelona Olympic port and Sant Adria de Besos (a local municipality) was developed to house the event. The newly-designed site includes a convention centre, a central plaza, parks, auditoriums, a new port and the triangular Forum Building. During those 141 days of the Universal Forum of Cultures people had the opportunity to attend different speeches on essential problems, but also enjoy theatre, circus, cabaret, performances, exhibitions, concerts, markets, games and many other activities.

Following the end of the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures the site was further developed. As a result the Forum Park became a suitable place for massive events as well as for spending an amusing weekend with many attractions offered to its visitors. These attractions range from guided tours around the main exhibition building to swimming in the sea-water pools. Also, the diving school in the swimming area is a perfect proposition for those with more adventurous ways of thinking. Children are not forgotten by the organisers of the activities and their parents are welcome to leave them in the hands of day centre personnel where the young visitors both have fun and learn a lot.

The area of the Parc del Forum is divided into different zones such as the Forum Building, the solar panel, the esplanade and the Auditoriums. These types of facilities are organised in four colour-identified zones- the Blue, the Orange, the Green and the Lilac zone each one of them following a certain type of logic and activities. For example, the Blue zone comprises the seaside with the sandless seawater pools with the adjacent beach services, the Parc dels Esculls (Reef Park) (a concrete structure in the water that encourages plankton larvae to develop and fish to come to feed on this plantation) and the Parc dels Auditoris (Auditorium Park) where auditoriums for different number of visitors are placed. The Lilac zone includes the Esplanade and the Forum building, where exhibitions are held and one can participate in various games. As for the Orange zone, it unites the Esplanade, the Parc d’Auditoris and the Solar Panels (the largest city solar cells in Europe). The Green zone is the area in front of the Forum Building. In the Forum Park many massive events are held such as concerts of renowned bands and different annual festivities and fairs.
