Casa de Las Siete Chimeneas
Casa de Las Siete Chimeneas, literally meaning ‘house of the seven chimneys,’ is a Renaissance urban residence, known primarily for its set of seven tall-rising chimneys. Constructed in the period 1574 – 77, it has been a popular object of legends. Some say that the first owner of the house was a lover of king Felipe II, and that her ghost can still be seen at night strolling around the chimneys on the rooftop.
During reconstruction works in 1880, when the house was being converted into a bank, the workmen came across remains of a woman from the 16th Century, along with a few coins from the period. A popular tale has it that the seven chimneys of the house symbolise the seven deadly sins to which king Felipe II succumbed. Today, Casa de Las Siete Chimeneas is the seat of the Spanish Ministry of Education.
