Calle Mayor
One of Madrid's major streets, as well as one of the oldest, Calle Mayor stretches from Cueste de la Vega near the
Royal Palace on the west to the
Puerta del Sol on the east. Its central location, close to Royal Palace and two of Madrid's biggest squares (Mayor and del Sol), makes it an obligatory stop on every tour of Madrid.
Calle Mayor used to be the main street of Madrid during the Habsburg reign. It connected the old Alcazar with the Plaza Mayor. The monumental architecture, typical for that period, was a result of Alonso de Turrillo's plan.
