Calle de Alcala
Calle de Alcala is one of the most important boulevards in Madrid. It stretches from
Puerta del Sol in the west to the Avenida de la Hispanidad on the east. As one of the oldest streets in Madrid, Alcala offers wonderful sights throughout it's length of 10 kilometres, which makes it also the longest street in the city.
Walking down from Puerta del Sol, one of the symbols of Madrid, strollers will pass a number of famous historical buildings. On the left side there is the
Ministerio de Hacienda (Ministry of Finance), a great example of Baroque architecture, the
Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando) and the famous art gallery built in 1775 which houses priceless works from 16th and 17th Centuries. The Baroque
Iglesia de las Calatravas (Church of the Calatravas) is also just a few steps away. It is a must-see for any architectural enthusiast. Calle de Alcala, with its many wonderful squares and sights (Puerta del Sol, Plaza de Cibeles, Puerta de Alcala or junction with
Gran Via) and impressive buildings, is undoubtedly one of the most popular points of interest for tourists in Madrid.
