National Museum Reina Sofia
Since it first opened its doors in 1990, the Reina Sofia Museum and Art Centre has been one of the largest art museums in the world with total area of the exhibition rooms amounting to 12,505 square metres. It is situated in a modern building at the southern end of Paseo del Arte, the avenue, on which the other two world-famous museums in Madrid, Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza are also located. They all form the so called Arts Triangle of Prado. The Reina Sofia Museum was created with the purpose of gathering the most significant achievements of modern Spanish art under one roof. The permanent collection of the museum, which was inaugurated by the Royal Family of Spain on 10 September 1992, consists of works created since the end of the 19th Century up to present days.
The most prominent among them is undoubtedly the Pablo Picasso's masterpiece 'Guernica'. More than 570 other exhibits complement the collection. In addition, the museum hosts a large number of temporary collections and exhibitions. Currently the total number of exhibits in the museum is estimated at approximately 16,200 works; paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, videos, art installations and even a few pieces of architecture. Remarkable Spanish artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Juan Gris, Joan Miro, Antonio Saura, Eduardo Chillida and hundreds of others are immortalised in the Reina Sofia Museum.
