The museum was established with a Royal Decree in 1912 under the name of Museo Nacional de Artes Industriales. Today it is situated on several floors and encompasses 62 halls and rooms with approximately 30,000 different exhibits. Most of them date back to the 15th and 16th Centuries and include predominantly furniture, ceramics and pieces of decorative art. The rich collections feature also Gothic carvings, elaborate four-poster beds, tapestries, festival crosses and even kitchen equipment from these times.
More recently, the
Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas expanded with two more floors, dedicated to artefacts from the 18th and 19th Centuries. The museum boasts a large library containing more than 20,000 volumes in the field of decorative arts, history of arts and museum studies.
