Tower Bridge
The Tower Bridge on the River Thames surely tops the list of the most famous bridges in the history of the world. Officially inaugurated in 1894, it was designed by Sir Horace Jones. Today, it’s one of the immediately recognised emblematic images of the British capital. Considering the volume of traffic along the river at the time of the construction of the bride, it was designed to feature two bascules that could be lifted in order to enable the passage of tall ships. In the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, this routine took place on daily basis; nowadays, it can still be seen a few times a week.
The Tower Bridge is a neo-Gothic construction featuring two magnificent stone-clad towers offering breathtaking views of the city. The North and South Towers are connected by an enclosed walkway accessible to all pedestrians. The towers hold the fascinating Tower Bridge Experience exhibition, presenting the history and the evolution of the bridge throughout the decades. The engine rooms display the original Victorian mechanisms and engines used to power the bridge.
