Wembley Stadium
Heir of one of the most famous sports and concert venues on the planet, the newly opened Wembley Stadium is already a cultural pop icon. Its primary role is being home ground for the English national football team, as well as the host of the domestic football league finals. With a capacity of more than 90,000 seats, it’s the second largest venue of this kind in Europe. It’s also the largest football stadium with all of the stands covered.
The Wembley Stadium is now often called the New Wembley Stadium to differentiate it from the older structure that was closed in 2000. The Empire Stadium, as it was originally called, was one of the world’s most prominent football venues, sometimes referred to as the “Home of Football.” In operation since 1923, its mission officially ended on March 9, 2007 when the New Wembley Stadium was inaugurated. Designed by the architect teams from HOK Sport and Foster and Partners, the new stadium is equipped with a platform system, allowing it to convert into a fully professional athletics venue. The trademark feature of the New Wembley is the 140-metre tall arch supporting the northern and part of the southern roof.
