Benjamin Franklin House
In the very heart of London, just a few steps from the famous
Trafalgar Square, is set Benjamin Franklin House. This is the world's only remaining home where the founding father of the United States used to live. This notable scientist, diplomat and inventor spent there over 16 years of his life, between 1757 and 1775.
The museum holds a vast collection of Franklin's memorabilia. There is also a display revealing his scientific discoveries including the lightning rod, bifocals, the carriage odometer and so called the Franklin stove. Not only a creative inventor, he also served as Deputy Postmaster for the American colonies and devoted much of his work to music constructing the splendid glass harmonica for the use of Mozart, Bach and Beethoven . Franklin was also a committed promoter of health care and hygiene, launching the first inoculation and creating air baths. Last but not least, he also possessed great literary talent, which is revealed in his numerous letters and articles written to Craven Street Gazette, which are also exposed in the museum.
