Finnish Institute
The Finnish Institute in London takes part in many projects in science, art and culture, as well as it helps arrange and run events in the UK, Ireland and Finland. The organisers of the projects and events are British, Irish and Finnish partners of the Institute. The Finnish Institute spreads information and creates contacts between professionals from different areas.
One of the events that the Institute will organize in 20007 will be Sibelius and Beyond classical music festival in London. International orchestras, conductors, soloists and chamber musicians will perform Sibelius’ music. The festival will start at September 12 and finish at December 5, 2007. Its activities in the arts are concentrated on contemporary art and popular culture. The main goal of the art projects is to promote Finnish artists and art professionals in Britain and Ireland. The Institute aims to raise the profile of Finnish art in the UK and Ireland. The art programme of the institution includes training events directed at art professionals, consultations and dissemination of information about the structures and objects of cultural organisations in the UK, Ireland and Finland. The Institute provides students, educational institutions and other institutions in different fields with information about education, training and research in those countries. Seppo Kimanen is the Director of the Institute. He has worked before as the executive director of the Helsinki Festival as well as of several other cultural events in Finland and other countries abroad. When he’s not in the office, he plays the cello in the famous Jean Sibelius String Quartet.
