Museum Calouste Gulbenkian
The museum of the celebrated Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, keeps
treasures, collected by the American oil tycoon Calouste Gulbenkian
(1869 - 1955) and donated to the people of Portugal in return
for tax concessions. The collection consists of two parts - Egyptian,
Greek, Roman, Islamic, Asian art and European acquisitions. Both
of them are relatively small, but the quality
of the pieces is remarkable. Admission is 03 and the establishment
is open Tuesday - Sunday, 10 am to 5:45 pm.

Castello de Sao Jorge
St. George's Castle was constructed by the Moors and it is on
site of a 5th century Visigoth fort. At the main entrance there
is a statue of Dom Afonso Henriques, who in 1147 besieged the
castle and ultimately drove the Moors from Lisboa. Within the
walls there are ramparts, towers and remnants of a palace that
was a residence of the kings of Portugal until the
16th century. An interesting view is the "Olisiponia" - a multimedia
exhibit of the city's history. Admission is EUR3.50 and the castle
is open April - September, daily from 9am to 7pm and October -
March, daily from 9am to 6pm.

Belem Tower
Belem Tower is probably the country's purest Manueline structure,
which is defined by the openwork balconies and domed turrets.
It was built in the early 16th century in the middle of the Rio
Tejo island and today this chalk - white tower stands near what
has become the north bank - evidence of the river's changing course.
It was originally constructed to defend the port
entrance, but also served as a prison in the late 16th till the
19th centuries. Admission is EUR2.25 and it is open Tuesday to
Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

Lisbon Zoo
Disposing a managerie of 2,000 animals from more than 370 species,
the Zoological Garden is always a popular spot. On the premises
of the Zoo there is a gorilla house, free range - style areas
for larger animals, a children's zoo with miniature houses and
small animals, a cable car ride and twice daily animal shows.
An additional advantage is that you can pack a
picnic lunch or eat at one of the on - site snack bars and restaurants.
Admission is EUR11 and it is open April - mid- October daily 10am
- 8pm; mid - October - March, daily 10am - 6pm.

Elevador da Gloria
This functional railway enables you to reach Bairro Alto by one
of the finest ways. It is situated on the western side of Avendia
da Liberdade, near Praca dos Restauradores. It runs up the steep
hill and takes only about a minute to reach the Sao Pedro de Alcantara
Miradouro, a viewpoint that looks out over the castle and the
Alfama. Admission is EUR0.90 one - way and it is open daily 7am
- midnight.
