Top Sights and Attractions in Milan

Milan features a wide range of attractions to suit the tastes of all tourists. Its old and impressive structures however, belong to the most visited landmarks of the city. The imposing Duomo Cathedral dating back to late 14th Century and Santa Maria delle Grazie church where Leonardo da Vinci painted his major masterpiece – 'Last Supper' are always bursting with tourists from all over the world. Another interesting building is the Castello Sforzesco – a castle built for the protection of the city in 1368, but the castello too, will most likely be crowded. To have a little bit of peace and quiet after a day of sightseeing, head to one of Milan's parks such as the Giardini Pubblici or Parco Sempione, where you will have the opportunity to contemplate the beauty of Milan's heritage.

Milan’s premier event venue, Arena Civica, was designed in the neo-Classical style by the architect Luigi Canonica in 1805. It’s situated in the north-eastern corner of the Parco Sempione. It’s location was a deliberate choice – in close proximity to the reconstructed Castello Sforzesco, the Arena Civica was devised as a permanent ground for major festivities and celebrations. The arena was built using materials taken from the ruins of the castle. Modelled after Roman amphitheatres, it features an elliptic floor framed by four main gates.

The Bagatti Valsecchi Museum, a non-profit museum set in a historic house in the Montenapoleone district of Milan. It features the Italian Renaissance Art and Decorative Arts collections of barons Bagatti Valsecchi. The vast exhibits can be viewed in the barons’ home, at the same time showcasing the authentic ambiances and the evocative aristocratic Milanese taste of late 19th Century.

Boscoincitta (Woods in the City) is one of Milan’s best known and largest areasof green spaces in this city. Together with the Parco delle Cave and the Parco Treno that lie in the immediate vicinity of Boscoincitta and even have connection with it, the three shape the so-called Agricultural Park. Boscoincitta is situated in the western part of Milan, being slightly away from the city centre but well connected to it through the Novara Street. The surface of Boscoincitta covers a total of 110 hectares with various stunning landscape features, including an artificial lake, vegetable gardens for lovers of horticulture and, last but not least, woods that are the most characteristic attraction of the park and from whence its name is derived. The park serves as a natural connector between the urban areas of Figino, Trenno and Quinto Romano and the rural area in the north-east. On the premises of Boscoincitta there is also an old shack, the St Romano shack, reconstructed it now houses the park’s authorities and the park’s library as well.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele represents the most popular covered shopping street in Milan. Situated behind the Cathedral of Milan, it connects the Piazza Duomo and the Teatro Alla Scala. Flanked by modern porticoes, this walking passage offers the greatest selection of stores and boasts the second largest pedestrian precinct in the city centre. It has a modern design with two glass-vaulted arcades, crossing in an octagon. Even on rainy days Corso Vittorio Emanuele is very convenient for shopping - providing shelter and a cosy ambience for shoppers.

Situated in Piazza del Duomo, Milan’s main square, Duomo is famous as one of the largest Catholic cathedrals in the world, second only to the Cathedral of Seville. It is 157 meters long and has space for 40,000 people. The American writer and journalist Mark Twain, impressed by the edifice’s grandeur, included a rapturous description of the Duomo Cathedral in his ‘Innocents Abroad’. Today this Gothic cathedral still stands as the symbol of Milan and arguably its most renowned landmark that continues to awe travellers with its timeless beauty.

Giardini Pubblici (The Public Gardens) is a wonderful garden complex in the heart of Milan offering a refuge from the city bustle and pleasant views of the well-manicured garden facilities. The more than 170,000 square metres large area covers the central parts of the city between the Venice Door and the streets of Palestro and Manin, which is very convenient for anyone just passing through to catch some rest there. The Public Gardens take pride in being the first designated communal park in Milan, and their namesake is renowned journalist and writer Indro Montanelli. The presence of an old villa and museum on the gardens’ premises makes them even more attractive for a great number of visitors. Moreover, Giardini Pubblici mirrors an epoch of Milanese art through the numerous magnificent sculptures, designed by many celebrity citizens of Milan. The wide range of tree species also adds to the atmosphere of this wonderful facility.
