Italy is known as the birthplace of pizza, and indeed, you will find plenty of pizza places in Rome. You will also find Chinese, Indian, native specialties and of course, excellent hamburgers. Pizza originated in Naples, and thus the Bella Napoli restaurant is aptly named. Run by a Neapolitan family, it has a traditional atmosphere and excellent, efficient services. When in Rome, do as the Romans - many locals come here and the spot is extremely popular. Thin crust and deep pan pizzas are available, and the latter are much deeper than American deep pan. Native Italian toppings are an extra. The thin, crispy crust pizzas are very healthy and authentic. The restaurant is conveniently located in the downtown area, close to many famous attractions. The Antico Forno Roscioli is an excellent place to try some local treats. Pastry, pizza, and many varieties of bread - this place is a true tourist's paradise. There is also the Pasticceria Imperiale at the heart of Rome, serving classic Italian croissants and pies. This restaurant is open at all hours. You can come here no matter how late it is. Knowledge of some Italian will do you no harm. It is a good way of knowing where to go and eat. A ristorante is an expensive venue with an elite clientele. A trattoria will be a bit cheaper, and the osteria are the cheapest restaurants, often serving simple, delicious local food. A pizza place is a pizzeria, and enoteca is a wine bar. The first course is known as primo, side courses are contorno, main courses are secondo and dessert is dolce. Popular desserts are tiramisu, a delicious ice cream cake, sundaes, cheese and fruit. A starter is referred to as antipasti. If you think eating pizza in Rome is banal, you can try the Ar Grottino der Traslocatino. It doesn't have an exceptionally elegant appearance - in fact, it is a classic osteria in terms of price and food quality. There is no menu here, and you need some knowledge of Italian in order to have a successful dining experience. Do not let the appearance of the establishment put you off, because you will miss a rare treat. The place is very clean, and the food is excellent. A wide variety of homemade dishes are available. Tourists rarely visit the place, as it is located in a quiet, isolated area of the city. You must call in advance, because chances are you won't be able to get a seat otherwise. La Pace at Via Madonna Dei Monte is one of the best traditional Chinese restaurants in Rome. The staff is Chinese, perfectly fluent in Italian. The restaurant is conveniently located at the heart of the vibrant city. If you visit Taverna Parione, you're in for a unique treat. This establishment is tourist-oriented and offers a lot more than pizza - in fact, just about any dish you can think of. Traditional Roman recipes are the best here. The menu is translated into English and the staff is attentive and efficient. Your needs will be fully met. You will find a notable Indian restaurant near La Pace at Via Dei Serpenti. Indian restaurants are far less common in Rome than in London, so this place is really unique. The food is exotic and superb, although the prices are a bit high. On a whole, hamburgers in Italy are not recommended. Tourists would do well to stick to local cuisine. But if you can't overcome the urge, be aware that there are over twenty McDonalds restaurants in Rome. The ones in the downtown area are located at Piazza Di Spagna, Via del Corso, Piazza Barberini, Via Nazionale, Piazza della Republica and Piazza della Rotonda. The first one is at Piazza Di Spagna. At the time authorities did not accept the idea wholeheartedly, and demanded that the restaurant appear conventional and blend in with the surroundings. In result of this it is very hard to see, because it doesn't feature the classic yellow and red company colours. The lettering is gold, engraved on dark grey marble. The interior has fountains, murals, and brickwork. Salad bars and fresh fruit are available. |
